What is a Board Certified Orthodontist? Drs. Hanis and Stevenson are Board Certified Orthodontists, also called Diplomates. You might be wondering what that means and why it matters.
Orthodontist First of all, did you know that all orthodontists are dentists? That’s right! An orthodontist is a dentist who continued on in educational training to specialize in orthodontics. Every orthodontist must be licensed by his/her state dental board, but not every orthodontist is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics and awarded Diplomate status.
Board Certification Board certification is a voluntary and exhaustive process based on the highest standards of orthodontic knowledge and skill. It takes hundreds of additional hours over their general orthodontic education and training to obtain; including passing an extensive oral and written exam to evaluate diagnosis, treatment planning and finished treatment ability. Board certification is a unique achievement – only 1 in 3 orthodontists are board certified.
